Important notice!
With the Apple iOS11 update the Camera Awesome is no longer supported by SmugMug. Please see instructions below on how to retrieve your photos from the app if you’ve already made the switch to iOS11.
If you have not yet made the update to iOS 11, we suggest retrieving your photos from Camera Awesome before making the update. (See instructions for this at the bottom of the page.)
The short story—why we shut down Camera Awesome.
As avid photographers ourselves, we created Camera Awesome as a labor of love. We still love it! Unfortunately, Apple made some major changes to the app development requirements for iOS updates—changes that meant we’d have to scrap Camera Awesome and rebuild it from the ground up. Instead of investing considerable resources into that effort, we chose to focus on our core product: SmugMug—continuing to make it even more awesome.
A solution to retrieving your Camera Awesome photos from iOS11-updated devices.
We have identified third-party software as a way to get your trapped photos back from the Camera Awesome app if you’ve made the update to iOS11. Follow the steps below.
- Download iExplorer here: http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/ *
- If you are on iOS 8.3 or higher, you will have to first backup your device to your computer (and select backup apps). When that’s done, launch iExplorer, click on backup explorer and it will list all the apps backed up by name. Have it find com.smugmug.cameraawesome and look in the Documents folder.
- Click on Backups in the left panel.
- Click on Backup Explorer below it.
- Find the app folder in the list which will be named after its bundle ID in a reverse domain format (com.developer.AppName).
- Double-click on the folder to open it, and you’ll see the Documents and Library folders inside most app folders.
- Simply drag/drop any files to your computer or right-click and choose Export to folder.
* Please note: iExplorer is not supported or affiliated with SmugMug and we can not provide any further information about third-party software.
How to retrieve your photos from Camera Awesome with Apple iOS 10 or earlier and Android OS.
Your Awesomized photos are saved only within the Camera Awesome app by default. To view them, launch Camera Awesome and tap the thumbnail image in the lower-left corner to open your Awesome gallery.
Android
By default, your Awesomized photos save to the main photo folder in your camera roll. Open your phone’s native gallery app (Photos on Android), navigate to view all folders, and tap “Photos.” Your Awesomized photos should be there among your other pictures.
How to export/backup your Camera Awesome photos to your camera roll.
iOS
If you enabled “Export to Camera Roll” from the start, you’re set! All your Awesome photos can be found in your camera roll.
If you don’t have “Export to Camera Roll” enabled, you can still export all your Camera Awesome photos to your camera roll for safekeeping. To do this, tap the photo thumbnail in the lower-left corner to open your most recent Camera Awesome photo, then tap the gallery icon in the top left to enter gallery view.
Toggle the multi-image slider on, then tap each photo in the album to ensure every image is selected.
Once all images are selected, tap the “Save to Camera Roll” icon. Choose whether to “Export Original” or “Export Edited” to save everything safely outside the app and directly to your phone.
If you plan to keep using Camera Awesome until it stops working, you can enable the export option now so future photos will automatically save to your camera roll. Expand the top toolbar and tap the gear icon to enter the Camera Awesome settings. Scroll down to the Backup section to enable “Export to Camera Roll” and allow Camera Awesome to access your camera roll when prompted. Then tap “Done.”
Android
Android users, your Camera Awesome photos are automatically saved to your camera roll, so there’s nothing you need to do to export them from the app.
You now have the option to upload your newly retrieved photos to SmugMug.
Now that cloud backup is enabled, it’s time to get your photos uploaded. From the camera screen, tap the photo thumbnail in the lower-left corner to open your most recent Camera Awesome photo, then tap the gallery icon in the top left to enter gallery view.
Toggle the multi-image slider on, then tap each photo in the album to ensure every image is selected.
Once you’ve selected all your photos, tap the Share icon and select SmugMug. Add any keywords you like and select your destination gallery, then tap “Share.” Your photos will begin uploading to your SmugMug account! Log in to find your new gallery and Awesome photos in your Organizer.
