Use the navigation content blocks

Basic: No Power: Yes Direct: No Portfolio: Yes Pro: Yes

The Power, Portfolio, and Pro plans include three of the navigation content blocks. The Pro plan also includes the Featured Event content block.

Helping your visitors find their way around your site may be the single most important thing you can do for them (and for you).

Existing Basic account holders, please see our Basic account customization options here

Direct account holders can see the customization options available to them here.

Create a navigation menu.

The Menu content block offers the most options for creating a navigation experience for your viewers. As with every content block, you can add the menu to your entire site, only your homepage, or create page-, gallery-, and folder-specific versions.

  1. While viewing a page on your site, select Customize Design and choose whether to add the new menu to your entire site or a specific section, such as only the homepage.
  2. Navigate to Content Navigation, then drag the Menu content block onto the page.
  3. Open the content block's Tools menu by clicking on the wrench icon.

Basic tab settings:

  • Layout Style: Choose between a horizontal or vertical bar.
  • Alignment: Options include left, right, or center.
  • Text Size: Adjust the size of the text.
  • Text Color and Hover Color: Options include default, emphasized, muted, or accent (from your theme) for links.
  • Top Link Format and Sub Link Format: Options are capitalize, lower case, or regular.
  • Top Link and Sub Link Separators: Can be turned on or off.
  • Collapse for Mobile: Enables a mobile-friendly appearance by collapsing the menu.

Links tab settings:

The Links tab allows you to add additional links to the default Home/Browse/Search links in your menu navigation.

Add Links: Click on the plus symbol to add a new link. A new menu will open, allowing you to pick the page to link to.

  • Give the new link a Title (this title will appear in your navigation menu).
  • Choose the type of Link for your navigation button, which can link to an outside URL, a contact form, a SmugMug page, a search-input box, homepage, keyword search, browse page, date page, or a client area.

Create a Dropdown Menu

When adding a link to a SmugMug folder that contains folders, galleries, and pages, you can include all the nested pages by enabling Include Sub-Links. This will generate a navigation link with a dropdown menu displaying those folders, galleries, and pages.

    • To nest specific dropdown items, drag an item to the right in the list. That item will then nest under the item above it.

Note: The font used in your navigation menu is controlled by the body font you select in your theme.

Add a Breadcrumb to a Webpage

The Breadcrumb content block helps visitors navigate your site by showing the path from the homepage to the current webpage. Breadcrumbs display clickable links, allowing viewers to quickly return to the homepage, parent folder, or any subfolder along the path. You can add a breadcrumb to any webpage on your SmugMug site for improved site navigation.

Create a Custom Navigation Button

The Button content block allows you to create a clickable button that links to a specific webpage. Use it to direct visitors to folders, galleries, pages on your SmugMug site, or even external webpages. You can also create a button that opens SmugMug's built-in contact form, making it easy for visitors to reach you.

Feature Client Events on Your Site

If you have a Pro account and use the Events tool, you can highlight specific events directly on your site. The Featured Events content block allows you to display selected events on your homepage, as well as within any folder, gallery, or custom webpage. This is a great way to showcase important client events or promote upcoming sessions.
