Use a printmark

  • Updated

Picture this: Your logo. A team logo. The wedding date. Your signature.

These can all be printmarks, available on the Portfolio and Pro plans! You can dress up any prints or digital downloads, ordered from your site, with endless possibilities. Different than watermarks, printmarks will actually show up on the final delivered product and are designed to a specific size of 1% of the image surface.

Print watermarks

Create a printmark.

Printmarks can be created from text or a custom image. For a custom image, first design the printmark in your favorite image editor. If you want transparent areas (such as a custom border where your photo shows through the center), then you should save your image as a transparent PNG file. This is similar to making a transparent watermark, and we have a great tutorial for creating that kind of file here.

When uploading a printmark image to your site, we suggest using an Unlisted (Anyone with the Link) gallery so people can't find it.

Tip: We recommend your printmark image be at least 1500 pixels on the longest side, so it looks good on prints big and small.

In your Selling Tools, navigate to the Branding section. Alternatively, you can navigate to your Gallery Settings Shopping tab Printing Printmarks.

Click Manage under Printmarks in the Printing section to open the printmarks options menu.

Text-based.
Click Create to expand the menu, and then in the drop-down menu change the Type to Text.

Type in your text, then make any adjustments until it’s perfect. Settings you can customize include the following:

  • Font type and color.
  • Background color.
  • Where you want the printmark to appear on your photos (top, corner, etc.).
  • How transparent or “faded” you want your printmark to be.

Custom image.
Click Create to expand the menu, and then in the drop-down menu change the Type to Image.

Select the Image icon, then choose if you would like to upload a new photo or choose from an existing photo already in one of your galleries.

Selecting Upload New Photo will open a window on your computer to select an image for upload. Once you choose an image, it will upload in the background, then the printmark will appear on the example image as seen below. The image will be uploaded to a system-generated gallery titled printmarks and will be visible in your Organizer.

Selecting Choose from SmugMug will open the picker, where you'll navigate to a gallery with an image you want to use for your printmark.

Once the image is set, you can adjust the other settings to your personal preference. Settings you can customize include the following:

  • Name the printmark.
  • Where you want the printmark to appear on your photos (top, corner, etc.).
  • How transparent or “faded” you want your printmark to be.

Once you're happy with the way your printmark looks, click Create.

How it works.

Enable printmarks for printed products.
Once you've created your printmark(s), navigate to your gallery settings and enable printmarks in the Shopping tab.

Don't forget that you can create a gallery preset to apply printmarks, along with other favorite settings, when creating new galleries.

Sell digital downloads with a printmark.
In your pricelist, you can choose to sell digital downloads with or without a printmark. Check out all the details for selling printmark digital downloads in this article.

Tip: We highly recommend that you enable proof delay in your galleries so you can review and adjust orders as they get placed.

Note: During proof delay, you can remove printmarks for printed products within the order, but not for digital downloads.
